Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

In HSC Medical Center's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (also known at the "Cath Lab"), certified cardiologists collaborate with an integrated team to make diagnoses and offer a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. Catheterization procedures involve inserting a flexible tube (called a catheter) through the patient's femoral artery at the groin or through the radial artery at the arm, then moving the catheter through major arteries leading to the patient's heart.

Common procedures include:

• Coronary Angiogram: This imaging procedure helps identify the build-up of fat and cholesterol plaque in the arteries and other types of blockages in the coronary system.
• Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) and Coronary Stenting: In PTCA procedures, the Cath Lab team treats blocked coronary arteries with balloons to open the vessels. A small expandable coil ("stent") is then placed at the affected vessel to provide a more long lasting result.
